    Trade war: President Trump on Saturday released letters imposing new 30 percent tariffs on imports from Mexico and the European Union, dashing hopes for deals that would avoid such punishing levies. The tariffs, which are set to take effect Aug. 1, are a significant escalation in Mr. Trump’s trade battles, aimed squarely at two of America’s closest and most pivotal trading partners.

 Tariffs vs. deals: When Mr. Trump paused his global tariffs for 90 days in April, he said the delay would give his administration time to reach trade deals with countries across the world. Cuts to wind and solar: The Energy Department plans to eliminate hundreds of millions of dollars in funding for major projects this year, the latest Trump administration effort to undo the national pullback from fossil fuels. The cuts, which were assailed by Democrats, focused on solar and wind projects and were defended by the department as a means of “increasing efficiency and promoting better stewardship of taxpayer dollars.”
